Authentic Gaming has followed up its Michigan approval that was issued in the latter stages of the past week by going live within the region alongside Rush Street Interactive.

In a move that also represents the Light & Wonder subsidiary’s “landmark US launch”, the integration has been undertaken with RSI’s BetRivers brand, which is in partnership with the Little River Band of Ottawa Indians within the region.

All titles to be delivered under the terms of the agreement will be done so via the company’s newly built Farmington Hills studio. This also includes space for bespoke environments for individual operators.

“Authentic Gaming has created a compelling array of content that speaks directly to the preferences of players in Michigan and this is a partnership we believe will prove to be highly successful going forward.”

To begin, five games have been made available to BetRivers’ Michigan-based players at launch. These include Premium Blackjack, Roulette and Baccarat, in addition to Stadium Blackjack and Michigan Auto Roulette. In addition to this alliance alongside RSI, it was also previously disclosed that a further partnership with the Keweenaw Bay Indian Community and its platform provider Golden Nugget Casino under the Golden Nugget brand, would follows Michigan Gaming Control Board approval.

iGaming Ontario, a subsidiary of the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, has confirmed that the launch date for its regulated igaming market will be for April 4.

From April 4, private gaming operators that have registered with the AGCO and have executed an operating agreement with iGaming Ontario can begin to offer its games to players within the region.

With a fixed date now set, the latest edition of the CasinoBeats 100 Club has us delving deeper into Ontario as we asked our members of the potential of the market once live.

We asked: What is the potential for the soon-to-be regulated Ontario market and how enticing could it be for operators to join?

With eyes firmly fixed on the regulated market, Shelley White, CEO, Responsible Gambling Council, expressed that Ontario is expected to be a “very attractive market for international operators”, due to its population – which is equivalent to the fifth largest state in the US.

She stated: “While Ontario specific data isn’t available, it is estimated that Canadians spend upwards of $4bn every year on grey market single-event sports wagering. Knowing the size of this market and the potential for market growth makes it clear why this would be enticing for operators.

“So, while there is significant revenue potential for the industry, there is also significant potential to raise the bar when it comes to responsible gambling.

“Ontario is a leader when it comes to responsible gambling. There are robust standards in place, set by the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario. Stakeholders across the province work collaboratively to ensure the standards are upheld and safeguards are in place to minimise risk, support a sustainable gambling industry and provide resources and support for those at risk.

“A strong regulatory framework already exists for land-based gambling and this approach has been replicated for sports betting and igaming.

“We must take into consideration that online gambling and sports betting possess unique characteristics compared to other types of gambling. Accordingly, there are distinctive responsible gambling considerations for online gambling and sports betting that require leadership and innovative strategies, focused on sustainable play.

“Our hope is that as gambling access is opened up, Ontario’s commitment to creating a culture of sustainable play will remain a focus for all stakeholders.”

Shelley White, CEO, Responsible Gambling Council.

“The fact that online gambling is easily accessible on multiple devices, 24/7, combined with the isolation factor and the opportunity to use alcohol and substances simultaneously increases the risk for problem gambling.

“Integrating betting into the popular Canadian pastime of watching sports, many people don’t consider sports betting as gambling because watching sports is something that is ingrained into society. The body of evidence indicates that many sports bettors perceive their knowledge of and ability to predict the outcome of sporting events at a higher level than reality. This illusion of control can pose a greater risk to bettors if not kept in check.

“Responsible gambling initiatives for sports betting and online gambling should include a robust set of marketing and advertising regulations that are evidence informed and tailored specifically for online gambling and sports betting. It will be equally important that consumer prevention programming remains a priority to provide information and resources to vulnerable populations like youth, young adults and priority populations who may be at a heightened risk for experiencing harm.

“Our hope is that as gambling access is opened up, Ontario’s commitment to creating a culture of sustainable play will remain a focus for all stakeholders.

“It will be important that operators entering the Ontario market are committed to and can demonstrate that they have the highest responsible gambling standards and practices in place to safeguard the public. The legalisation of single-event sports betting and expansion of online gambling is an opportunity for all stakeholders to reaffirm their commitment to responsible gambling.

“By working collaboratively and having open channels of communication between operators, regulators, sports leagues and allied public health professionals, we can continue to champion the prevention of gambling harms and foster a culture of responsible gambling in Ontario.”

Sharing similar thoughts to White, Philip Parry, CEO at Iforium, believes that Ontario could prove to be “the biggest market to regulate in 2022”.

“I believe the regulated opening of Ontario will entice multiple operators to enter, including those already established in North America as well as multiple European brands targeting Ontario for their first foray across the pond.

“This should deliver a competitive market and provide a great choice of brands for players to enjoy in Ontario.”

Another one of our members, Fiona Hickey, head of sales at Push Gaming, stated that, alongside the Netherlands, the Ontario market is one she has heard partners “prioritise the most this year”.

“Alongside the Netherlands, it is the market we are hearing partners prioritise the most this year…”

Fiona Hickey, head of sales at Push Gaming

She continued: “Canada has been an important market for a variety of key tier one and two operators for a number of years. With Ontario regulating, not only are existing operators in the country applying for licenses, and growing their presence, but also a number of others who are looking to enter and take a piece of this high potential regulated market.

“Alongside the Netherlands, it is the market we are hearing partners prioritise the most this year, especially as regulated markets become a bigger focus for a large number of partners. A significant percentage of the overall revenues from Canada already come from this region, so it’s an exciting prospect for partners to enter this market in a regulated fashion and grow from there.”

Magdalena Podhorska-Okolow, chief commercial officer at Authentic Gaming, stated that with Ontario opening up, it now provides operators an opportunity to “finally enter to market correctly and in accordance with fresh gambling laws” catered for the online casino market.

“Many operators have been treating Canada as a non regulated market targeting the country with .com licences as no local licences were available to date,” Authentic’s CCO noted. “This new regime will also force many operators to cease all other .com licensed Canadian activity since Ontario is said to be in the range of 40-50 per cent of activity for the country.

“The market is also ripe and matured from an online perspective considering the Ontario Lottery Corporation offering an online casino offering for quite some time now, hence there is a good pool of players that will only grow now with the allowance of advertising of regulated gaming.

“It’s a market with huge potential and the compliance requirements have not been a ‘reinvention of the wheel’, but are similar to other highly regulated markets globally which operators are accustomed to, making the go to market an easy decision to make.”

Echoing the thoughts of Podhorska-Okolow, Razvan Haiduc, CEO, Armadillo Studios, remarked that Ontario will be “among the most exciting markets” to open up in 2022, with new regulation set to bring with it “increased responsibility and stability” for the local industry.

He concluded: “Business plans can be made and acted upon without the constant spectre of regulatory disruption. Players can be actively protected from predatory practices, while at the same time enjoying high quality entertainment in a controlled and respectful environment.

“Unlike some other regulations that came into force in 2021, Ontario seems to be acknowledging market realities while at the same time providing a proper safety net for at-risk gamblers. It also (at the time of this writing) doesn’t limit the number of operators that can apply for a licence, unlike the approach that is commonly taken in the US.

“This route should ensure that the market grows into a vibrant, active and innovative environment, where operators can grow, and players can enjoy gambling responsibly.”

Each week, CasinoBeats breaks down the numbers behind some of the industry’s most interesting stories. Today, we revisit a further Scientific Games purchase, MGM divestment, vaccination mandates, and GambleAware’s NGTS progress.

Scientific Games advanced its global igaming ambitions, as well as detailing its entry into the live casino vertical, after acquiring Authentic Gaming.

The company had previously affirmed an ongoing aim of becoming “a brilliant, forward-thinking gaming company,” as well as “the igaming industry leader,” upon securing the purchase of Sydney-based slots studio Lightning Box three months ago.

Scientific Games said that its “strong ambitions” for the Authentic Gaming includes securing an extended offering across the US which will see the creation of an array of studios with view to offering a localised product for operators across the region.

The purchase, which is lauded as representing “another milestone” in SG’s ongoing strategic plan, strengthens the firm’s in-house development capabilities to build live casino products.

Furthermore, it will also allow the company to further leverage its content IP, land-based relationships and OpenGaming platform for accelerated growth in this channel.

A UK Gambling Commission interim evaluation into last year’s credit card ban indicated that “the action is popular among consumers and has not resulted in harmful unintended consequences”.

The ban on gambling with credit cards was announced on January 14, 2020, and ultimately introduced three months later, with a view to “add another layer of protection for consumers and add friction to the process of gambling with borrowed money”.

The report, based upon an online tracker survey, with around 2,000 adults over 18, and consumer voice research, that involved an eight day online programme with 30 individuals, was undertaken by Yonder Consulting and 2CV, respectively, and found that support for the ban among consumers “has been largely positive”.

The UKGC added that qualitative data from consumers “supports the conclusion that the ban helps people to gamble within their means and retain control”.

The proportion of consumers reporting gambling with other forms of borrowed money is said to have remained stable, with it added that “there has been no increase in reports of illegal money lending related to gambling”.

Canadian-based casino games developer Pong Games Studios had a multimillion-dollar judgement ruled against it by the Superior State of California following a decade-long pursuit.

Confirmed by California attorney general, Rob Bonta, as part of the terms of the judgement, Pong agreed to pay $3.5m in civil penalties, costs, and attorney fees, along with permanently halting its illegal gambling operations within the state.

Additionally, Pong may also be held liable for as much as $15m if it fails to comply with the terms set out in the final judgement, with the group required to relinquish all rights to seized assets described in the complaint, with the California Department of Justice authorised by law to destroy all such seized equipment.

Commenting on the ruling Bonta noted that “under the guise of lawful sweepstakes”, Pong had “knowingly used casino-style games” as a way to “prey upon vulnerable” players within the state and the judge now “puts a halt” on its unlawful activities.

MGM Resorts is to divest Las Vegas’ The Mirage Hotel and Casino, as the group stands poised to add the operations of the Cosmopolitan next year after entering into a £1.65bn deal, alongside Blackstone, in September.

The comments came in an earnings call regarding the group’s third quarter performance, during which Bill Hornbuckle, MGM CEO and president, also detailed ongoing growth efforts in the US, concerning New York in particular, as well as Japan.

In addition to detailing an intention to offload “a historic property with great brand recognition and a strong customer and loyal following,” the company also remains “keen on diversifying our business and further expanding our operations globally”.

Following a “milestone” agreement that saw the group selected by the Orix consortium as a partner to build and operate an integrated resort in Osaka, MGM is working to submit an area development plan to the central government in the coming months and is “hopeful and confident” of being awarded a license next year.

31

Crown Resorts issued a statement to confirm that a mandatory vaccination policy will apply to all visitors of the group’s New South Wales and Queensland-based venues.

This includes employees, customers and contractors, and culminates a month-long consultation period that was announced in September, which saw the casino operator undertake stakeholder consultation with employees, unions, industry and business organisations.

While this will come into effect immediately in Sydney and Melbourne, Crown Perth will have until January 31 to finalise and implement the policy, which will be in line with Western Australian Public Health Directions.

While both Crown Sydney and Crown Melbourne are already complying with current public health orders, this move confirms the company’s position on mandatory vaccination for its properties until further notice.

GambleAware detailed the continued progress of an ambition of heightening awareness of its National Gambling Treatment Service.

Following awareness raising campaigns led by the charity, targeted primarily at high-risk male gamblers (PGSI 8+), the firm reported that “recognition continues to grow wave on wave”.

The latest campaign tracking study, conducted by Ipsos Mori, showed that total awareness of the service now stands at 40 per cent of all high-risk male gamblers, and 50 per cent of the “important audience” of affected others.

Moreover, the group added that the NGTS campaign reached 74 per cent amongst high-risk male gamblers in August 2021, as well as 79 per cent amongst affected others.

Increasing numbers of high-risk gamblers are also said to agree that they would contact NGTS as a first step if they had concerns about their gambling, with 60 per cent suggesting that this is the case in August 2021, which is up from 47 per cent in May 2020.

Audiences’ improved response has seen GambleAware register an increase in calls to the NGTS’ National Gambling Helpline, through both calls and online chats, which is up 41 per cent in the past two years ending March 31, 2021.

75.9

Aspire Global “will become a clearly focused B2B company and even stronger and more profitable,” Tsachi Maimon, group CEO, confidently assured upon dissection of the group’s recent B2C divestment, which is expected to close this month, and Q3 examination.

The firm says that the sale, rolled out last month with Esports Technologies for $75.9m, will enable Aspire to capitalise on the increased opportunities in “the big and quickly growing” US and Brazilian markets, noting that it has made “key progress” in both.

The comments came as the group details its Q3 and year-to-date performance for the period ending September 30, 2021, where revenue grew 46 per cent to €58.6m (2020: €40.1m), reflecting “continued good business momentum” across casino and sports and geographical expansion.

Casino provider Authentic Gaming has expanded its geographical footprint after launching in the emerging South African market with existing operator partner Betway.

Studio tables include Grand, 24/7, Casino Floor, Nightclub and Viva Las Vegas – with each set against ornate backgrounds with highly trained dealers.

Commenting on the deal, Magdalena Podhorska-Okolow, CCO of Authentic Gaming, said: “International expansion is a priority for Authentic Gaming right now and we are delighted to have entered the fast-growing South African market with our long-standing partner, Betway.

Being the “first cricket-themed live roulette title in the world”, the table is set against the backdrop of a live scoreboard where players can keep up to date with all of the action and scores from the Indian Premier League, as well as other leagues and tournaments.

Furthermore, Betway will also add a series of Auto Roulette titles to its live dealer portfolio, including classic, speed and VIP.

“South Africa is a market with huge potential and we believe betting on casino games will be very popular among players in the region as we’ve seen tremendous growth in recent months,” added Betway’s Phillip Superamonien.

Authentic Gaming has expanded into the Spanish gaming market after disclosing that it will now be offering its live table games to operators within the region.

The live casino games provider says that “several” operators in the jurisdiction have launched Authentic Gaming content, with more set to follow in the coming months.

The provider adds that its focus on the Spanish market forms part of a wider strategy to enter regulated jurisdictions and provide operators with an array of “original and entertaining live table products as the vertical continues to see strong growth in the region”.

The newly launched portfolio includes a total of five-wheel installations in the Gran Via Casino, which is located in the heart of Madrid, that Authentic Gaming offers to the facility’s online presence via iJuego.es.

Authentic Gaming will offer three sub-categories of roulette, including studio, auto roulette and Authentic roulette, which includes the firm’s Gran Via Madrid Ruleta en Vivo.

This gives users from both online and land-based environments the opportunity to play with each other at the same time, and has been designed to increase player acquisition opportunities.

Magdalena Podhorska-Okolow, CCO of Authentic Gaming, commented: “This is a significant time and strategic move for Authentic Gaming. Our debut in Spain has allowed our operating partners to launch our content in yet another regulated market, and will undoubtedly pave way for new operators to add a good variety of new roulette games to their players.”

“Our current offer in Spain is innovative and unique in this sector, meaning we will be able to partner with the very best and they can offer an unrivalled experience to their player base.”

Authentic Gaming has documented its latest European market entry, after going live in Lithuania following a partnership with igaming and sports betting operator Topsport.

Under the terms of the deal, players at Topsport will be able to access Authentic Gaming’s suite of live roulette products, streamed from the provider’s Arena Studio located in Malta.

This includes Blaze Roulette, 24/7 Roulette and Grand Roulette plus the provider’s latest table series, the Las Vegas Collection, which includes Nightclub Roulette and Viva Las Vegas Roulette.

“Lithuania is a new market for Authentic Gaming but one where we see huge potential for live roulette and our products in particular,” explained Magdalena Podhorska-Okolow, CCO of Authentic Gaming.

“Topsport is the right partner to enter the market with as it has built an incredible reputation over the years for providing the absolute best retail, online and mobile betting experience.

“The addition of our live roulette games allows Topsport to stand out from its rivals and further establish itself as the number one betting brand in the country.”

Topsport launched in 2001 as the country’s first registered betting company, and subsequently became the maiden operator to launch online in 2005 and mobile betting in 2011.

Gintaras Staniulis, CEO at Topsport, explained: “From day one we have been the market leader in Lithuania and partnering with Authentic Gaming is yet another way we are offering our players more.

“Live casino provides a truly authentic experience but with the convenience of playing online and Authentic Gaming’s live roulette titles are among the best of the best.

“We believe they will be a big hit with our players and look forward to a long and successful partnership with our new friends at Authentic Gaming.”

This follows a deal inked earlier in the month by the live casino games specialist, which sees players at more than 60 brands, including Metal Casino, Turbonino, PlayOJO, AHTI Games, and DrückGlück, gain access to its content suite via a link-up with SkillOnNet.
