The family of a man who was killed in his Las Vegas Strip hotel room is suing the property for negligence and wrongful death.

Attorneys representing Bryan Angel Altamirano-Solano’s mother and father filed a lawsuit against Caesars Entertainment in the Clark County District Court (Nev.) earlier this month.

A housekeeper found Altamirano-Solano dead from a gunshot wound in a Caesars Palace hotel room on May 15, 2023, according to authorities. Surveillance footage showed two 20-year-old women, Erika Covington and Arionna Taylor, arriving at the room alongside Altamirano-Solano that morning and then exiting 10 minutes later.

As reported by the Las Vegas Review Journal, it wasn’t until approximately eight hours later that Altamirano-Solano, 25, was discovered inside the fifth-floor room with a fatal gunshot wound to the chest.

Both women pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and robbery with a deadly weapon and earlier this year were ordered to serve between 10 to 25 years in prison.

“I would like to send my condolences to Bryan’s family,” Covington said at her sentencing. “I deeply, genuinely apologize for the grief and the pain that’s been brought to you guys’ family.” Taylor, meanwhile, declined to speak.

Family Alleges Negligence and Wrongful Death

Altamirano-Solano’s family alleges that Caesars Entertainment did not have the proper measures in place to keep Altamirano-Solano safe.

“Defendant Caesars had policies and procedures for its security personnel to escort sex workers off its property,” the lawsuit read. “Defendant Caesars failed to report and record interactions with sex workers, contrary to its own policies and procedures.”

As such, the family is seeking at least $65,000 in general and compensatory damages.

“It wasn’t enough just taking his belongings,” Altamirano-Solano’s father, Victor Altamirano, said at the sentencing. “They had to kill him. I ask for justice for my son.”

Lawyers with Bighorn Law, Joshua Berrett and David Finegold, also contend that Caesars Place should be responsible for funeral expenses, as well as damages for grief, loss of support, and loss of companionship, for “directly and proximately” causing Altamirano-Solano’s death.

Both women will be eligible for parole in 2033 while receiving credit for time served.

Resorts World Las Vegas also Under Scrutiny

Caesars Entertainment is not the only hotel operator under fire. Resorts World Las Vegas (RWLV) recently received the second-largest penalty in Nevada’s gaming history, $10.5 million.

Although the nature of allegations is vastly different, RWLV was found to have significantly breached its anti-money laundering responsibilities. The allegations centered around Matthew Bowyer, a South Californian bookmaker who was reported to have over 700 clients.

The settlement showed that Bowyer racked up over $8 million in losses while gambling at Resorts World. Additionally, company executives granted Bowyer extended luxury perks typically afforded to high-rollers without questioning the source of funds.

Everi has linked-up with Caesars to begin a Nevada field trial for Jackpot Xpress, the group’s jackpot management system, under guidelines issued by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

This will take place at the Las Vegas Strip’s Caesars Palace, and upon final approval from the region’s regulator, Caesars will have the option to install Jackpot Xpress at all its Nevada properties.

Furthermore, the casino operator will also have the option to install Jackpot Xpress at all its owned and managed locations, pending further jurisdictional approvals.

Jackpot Xpress aims to enable casino staff to securely and efficiently process slot jackpots using a mobile device right at the winning gaming machine.

Through its proprietary technology, Everi says that the solution provides increased convenience for the player and improved efficiency for casino staff, all while eliminating paper, shrinking cage lines, and reducing player wait times which aims to deliver “a greatly improved gaming experience”.

Caesars Palace will also be the first casino to utilise Everi’s proprietary electronic tax form delivery system. This system allows tax forms, such as W2-G forms, to be securely retrieved by the player, further enhancing the guest experience.

“We continue to build an integrated digital neighbourhood that encompasses our full suite of financial and loyalty products and services. These efforts have positioned Everi as the industry’s financial technology leader and a strategic partner for forward-thinking customers such as Caesars Entertainment,” said Darren Simmons, Everi’s EVP and fintech business leader

“Our innovative products such as Jackpot Xpress provide value to our customers, as they enhance their ability to better serve their players while creating measurable efficiencies in their operations.”

Earlier in the month Everi lauded a strong start to the year, with increases across both its games and fintech reporting segments bringing record first quarter revenue for the firm.

Growth across these segments drove revenue to a record $139.1m (2020: $113.3m) during the three month period to March 31, 2021, with operating income reaching $40.2m (2020: $10.4m), net loss recovered from $13.5m to score income of $20.5m, and adjusted EBITDA rose 44.1 per cent to $75.4m (2020: $52.3m).

As Las Vegas begins to reopen its doors, those in ‘Sin City’ have started to adjust to the reality of the new normal brought on by the coronavirus pandemic.

Following the closure of casinos in Las Vegas over 78 days ago due to the ongoing COVID-19 virus, operators have been implementing health and safety guidelines and safeguards to protect staff and guests in order to resume action.

CasinoBeats takes a look through some of the casinos in Las Vegas to see how they have adapted to the change.

El Cortez Hotel and Casino

Upon reopening the El Cortez casino revealed new detailed health and safety plans, aligning with specific guidance from the Centre for Disease Control, the Southern Nevada Health District and the Gaming Control Board, and the UNLV’s School of Medicine.

“El Cortez has been a landmark of Downtown and the Las Vegas community since 1941,” said Kenny Epstein, El Cortez owner. “We miss our extended El Cortez family of employees and guests and we are very excited to welcome them back safely on June 4th.”

Fox5 Las Vegas posted a video inside of the El Cortez Hotel and Casino as it revealed its new plexiglass barrier, also known as a ‘sneeze guard’.

The D Las Vegas and Golden Gate Hotel and Casino

The D Las Vegas Casino and the Golden Gate Hotel and Casino were one of the first to officially reopen its doors to the public and resume gaming operations in Nevada.

Speaking to CalvinAyre.com, CEO and Downtown Las Vegas developer Derek Stevens said: “As with the rest of the world, the past few months have presented our city with an unprecedented challenge and our team has worked around the clock to bring back the Vegas experience our visitors know and love.

“We are excited to get our employees back to work and to welcome guests to the entertainment capital of the world.”

The casinos offered a preview of how the casino looks, following the implementation of healthy and safety guidelines, to ease the concerns of patrons.

Caesars Palace

Caesars Palace marked the reopening of its main lobby doors to the public with a speech on the Roman Plaza featuring Caesars Entertainment headliner Wayne Newton and CEO Tony Rodio.

Rodio gave a speech, reminiscing about the history of Caesars Palace over the last 54-years whilst acknowledging the continuing challenging circumstances.

He concluded by inviting guests to ‘get the next 50 years rolling’.

Caesars Palace also posted a photo from within the casino premises to show fans first hand its social distancing implementations.

The Golden Nugget

The Golden Nugget was another casino to reopen yesterday, posting images of its employees implementing mandated safety measures.

American gaming corporation Caesars Entertainment has announced the latest addition to Las Vegas’ LINQ Promenade, with the firm set to introduce the “intimate two-storey” ‘Jimmy Kimmel Comedy Club’ next year.

The partnership aims to showcase comedians of all varieties, ranging from up-and-coming talent to household names “curated by Kimmel and his team, in a venue designed by Jimmy and his comedian friends”.

Regarding the new venture Kimmel, who grew up in Las Vegas, commented: “Building a club like this in my hometown is a dream come true. I’ve done extensive research, consulting with veteran comics to create the ideal venue for comedians and comedy lovers.

“My aim is to capture the spirit of classic Vegas with late night shows, surprise guests, live music, memorabilia from my career and food that will rival the finest restaurants in town.

“Every comic who plays this club will get first-class treatment.  I am obsessing over every detail to make this the most comedy-friendly club in the world.”

At 8,000 square feet, and featuring nightly shows, the venue “will be the optimal setting for both comedy talent and the audience,” whilst also encapsulating an expandable showroom that seats up to 300 guests.

Jason Gastwirth, president of entertainment for Caesars Entertainment, explained: “We are elated by the opportunity to collaborate with Jimmy Kimmel on his first and only comedy club.

“As the leader in establishing iconic residencies in Las Vegas, we are creating this club to be an innovative and exceptional live comedy venue.

“Of course, Kimmel’s longtime Las Vegas affinity means he understands the city and what audiences want to see. Together, we look forward to delivering a top-quality comedy experience on the Las Vegas Strip.”

The latest development builds upon similar such residencies Caesars has enjoyed at The Colosseum at Caesars Palace, and Zappos Theater at Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino.

“Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club will bring yet another unique experience to The LINQ Promenade, thus rounding it out to be the epicenter for dining, retail and entertainment on the Las Vegas Strip,” said Shaun Swanger, senior vice president of attractions, retail and leasing for Caesars Entertainment.

Additional details regarding Jimmy Kimmel’s Comedy Club will be announced later this year.
