Creating a strong omnichannel strategy has always been one of the key challenges for any operator to overcome if they are to have successful online and land-based operations.

Francesco Postiglione, CEO of Casumo, will be taking part in a panel at SBC Summit in Lisbon later this year about this very topic, sharing his experience across both sectors and how they can help one another.

Speaking to CasinoBeats ahead of the event, Postiglione shared his thoughts on omnichannel strategy, his time as Casumo CEO so far, how land-based operations can boost their traffic and the operator’s preparations for online slot stake limits in the UK.

CasinoBeats: Thank you for taking the time to talk to us, Francesco. We’re fast approaching 18 months since you were appointed CEO of Casumo. How has your time in the role been so far?

Francesco Postiglione: My time at Casumo has been both challenging and exciting.

Challenging because I found a company that had very much neglected product and technology in the last few years, creating a material gap with the competition. It required a lot of hard work to bring Casumo back to where it belongs: a cutting-edge operator, at the forefront of product design, customer service and experience, as well as technology.

We are now able again to offer players an incredibly engaging journey when playing with us.

Exciting because I had the opportunity and the privilege to work with brilliant, talented people whose efforts have been instrumental in the comeback of Casumo.

CB: What challenges have you faced as Casumo CEO to date and how have you overcome them?

FP: As I said the biggest challenges were in Product and Technology: an obsolete front-end platform, a very asperous experience for the players, starting from the registration up to document verification and the gameplay itself.

To overcome these issues, and many others, we have put in place a strategic framework based on three pillars: smooth and simple experience, fun and engaging journey, and responsible gaming.

The making of each of these pillars has been sustained by five different strategic initiatives, that were all aimed at offering the players a best-in-class gaming experience through a number of improvements across the board: people, data, product, technology, commercial proposition, rebranding and marketing repositioning, focus on core markets.

CB: At SBC Summit in September, you will be taking part in the panel ‘Omnichannel Strategy for Enhanced Customer Experience’. What specific topic are you looking forward to highlighting in this discussion?

FP: I had the opportunity to manage two hybrid operators: Napoleon Sports and Casino in Belgium and PSK in Croatia. Both of them had important land-based operations, respectively gaming halls Napoleon and betting shops PSK.

I want to highlight how important is the training of the land-based personnel and how relevant are payments for a proper omnichannel strategy.

CB: What steps can be taken to boost traffic to the land-based betting sector?

FP: A combined digital and land-based commercial approach is fundamental to boost traffic to the land-based sector: hybrid promotions, cross-functionality of deposits and withdrawals, and KYC support are all elements that can make a difference today for the land-based sector.

And, of course, a good entertainment experience that can be reached in situ not only through a proper layout of the shops but also (and especially I would say) through proper training of the salespeople (welcome experience, cross-selling and upsell of both online and land-based promotions).

CB: Casumo operates across many regulated markets including the UK, which will introduce online slot stake limits from September later this year. How has Casumo been preparing for this introduction?

FP: We are working with our gaming providers and we will be ready. In the UK, we are experiencing strong, double-digit growth fuelled by very recreational players, so we do not expect major issues from this change.

CB: Finally, what are you and Casumo hoping to achieve by attending the SBC Summit?

FP: SBC is a great opportunity for learning, sharing experiences and knowledge, for creating a great network. As usual, Casumo is happy to be here.

As we sit on the cusp of the CasinoBeats Summit in Malta, we reflect on some of the key discussions we had with speakers at the event who shared their insight on trends in the industry.

The speakers focus on emerging markets, the vital nature of SEO and how the evolution of AI can have a big impact on igaming engagement.

CasinoBeats: Can you tell us more about the Japanese igaming market and how it has evolved in recent years?

Maya Yazaki, Rhino Entertainment’s Country Manager for Japan: The country has long been associated with diverse entertainment industries, including government-regulated horse racing, powerboat racing and bicycle racing, alongside the widespread popularity of pachinko and slot machines enjoyed by players nationwide.

According to the ‘DK-SIS White Paper 2021 Edition – 2021’ data, the publicly disclosed market size of the pachinko industry amounted to a substantial ¥14.6trn, indicating the significant scope of Japan’s gambling market.

While Japan passed legislation in 2018 to legalise casinos as part of its integrated resort initiative, there is a growing problem of online gambling addiction. Furthermore, the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has served as a tailwind, fueling the growth of the online gambling market.

Consequently, there is a growing sentiment in favour of regulating online gambling. It will be interesting to observe how the government navigates the anticipated challenges and whether it opts for legalisation accompanied by measures for responsible gambling and adherence to anti-money laundering guidelines in the future.

CB: With Japanese players placing a significant focus on brand trust, what can operators do to ensure they have a strong connection with players?

MY: Communication is the key to building brand trust. Operate with transparency and integrity in all dealings. Provide clear and easily accessible information about the company, its licensing and terms and conditions. Avoid deceptive practices and prioritise honesty in marketing communications.

Japanese players are known to be avid readers, preferring to read the terms and conditions before participating in any promotions. While simple content may be visually appealing, providing transparent information about the terms and conditions of promotions with longer text is preferred.

CB: Has Casumo utilised advancements in AI technology to streamline its business processes in any way?

Cristina Turbatu, Casumo CTO: At Casumo, we’ve placed a significant focus on leveraging advancements in AI technology to enhance various aspects of our business operations. Specifically, we’ve dedicated an entire strategic pillar to AI technology, recognising its potential to revolutionise player experiences and streamline internal processes.

In terms of player experiences, we’ve utilised AI to deliver personalised game recommendations and implement advanced player protection measures. By leveraging AI-powered providers, we are looking into tailoring gaming experiences to individual preferences and proactively identifying and addressing potential issues related to responsible gaming.

Moreover, we’ve harnessed AI technology across multiple facets of our operations, including customer support chats, content creation, marketing campaigns, player protection initiatives and software development processes. For instance, we’ve integrated Copilot, an AI tool developed by GitHub and OpenAI, into our workflows.

Copilot plays a crucial role in enhancing developer productivity by suggesting code snippets, promoting best practices, and facilitating rapid prototyping and iteration. This not only improves code quality and reduces maintenance overhead but also fosters collaboration and augments creativity among our development teams.

Overall, our strategic focus on AI technology at Casumo has enabled us to unlock new opportunities for innovation, efficiency, and improved player experiences, while also enhancing our internal processes and developer productivity.

CB: How do you think gamification has evolved over the past few years as technology within the online casino space improves?

CT: In recent years, the evolution of gamification within the online casino space has been closely tied to advancements in event streaming infrastructure. This technology has transitioned from being a novelty to a standard feature, enabling gamification platforms to deliver near-real-time responses to player actions.

With event streaming capabilities, gamification platforms can now offer dynamic and personalised experiences tailored to individual player behaviours. For example, players receive instant feedback and rewards based on their actions during gameplay, fostering greater engagement and immersion.

While some companies have only begun to explore the full potential of event streaming, there’s a growing trend among new suppliers who are fully embracing this technology. These suppliers are leveraging event streaming to develop innovative gamification solutions that capitalise on the immediacy of player interactions, ultimately enhancing the overall gaming experience.

Overall, the integration of event streaming technology has revolutionised gamification in the online casino space, paving the way for more interactive and engaging gaming experiences that adapt to the needs and preferences of players in real time.

CB: What steps do you believe can be taken to future-proof marketing and ensure lucrative campaigns stand the test of time?

Calvin Sammut, Head of Brand and Creative Strategy at Socios.com: To stand the test of time, brands must honour their history while embracing innovation.

By using data-driven tools, brands gain a deep understanding of their audience’s desires. Integrating these insights with evolving technologies like artificial intelligence ensures that their marketing campaigns are effective immediately and resonate deeply with consumers, giving them lasting impact.

Simultaneously, brands must stay true to their original values, the principles that initially made them stand out. These core values are vital for maintaining authenticity. By drawing from their heritage, foundational principles and unique selling points, brands can effectively steer their marketing strategies.

Storytelling is among the most powerful marketing tactics, and AI has the potential to enhance this by involving consumers directly in the narratives. For instance, the campaign “Greatest World Cup Ever” exemplifies this. This AI-driven campaign invited fans to appear in a personalised film alongside cricket stars.

CB: Can you tell us some of the ways in which influencer marketing and social media has evolved the way emerging companies reach new audiences?

CS: The combination of social media and influencer marketing has become a catalyst for the growth of both established and smaller brands.

Social media platforms, such as TikTok and Instagram, have not only given direct access to niche audiences but have also transformed consumers into active nano-influencers. This shift has been instrumental in providing smaller brands with genuine connections and authentic interaction with their audience.

Social media allows brands to showcase their unique personality and tone of voice, connecting with their audience in ways not possible before. Brands can now engage in real-time conversations, share behind-the-scenes glimpses and express their values and beliefs authentically.

A myriad of online casino operators are set to land in Malta next month as several igaming-focused discussions have been prepared for the upcoming CasinoBeats Summit

One operator gearing up for a week of panel discussions and product expositions is Casumo, as the operator’s Chief Technology Officer, Cristina Turbatu speaks to CasinoBeats about the “excellent opportunity” offered by the annual event.

Touching on the “immense promise” of Artificial Intelligence, Turbatu underlines the importance of player safety while suggesting that event streaming has “revolutionised gamification” in the online casino sphere.

CasinoBeats: What opportunities do events like CBS present for companies looking to access or showcase the industry’s latest technological innovations?

Cristina Turbatu: Participating in events like the CasinoBeats Summit presents an excellent opportunity for companies within the igaming and casino industry to access and showcase the latest technological innovations.

At CBS, companies can engage with industry leaders, discover cutting-edge solutions and explore emerging trends. For example, there are software providers that showcase a new AI-powered game recommendation engine and reporting 24 per cent decrease in churn and 10 per cent increase in NGR within their clients. By presenting such concrete examples, companies can demonstrate the tangible benefits of their innovations to potential clients and investors, driving interest and fostering collaboration.

Research in the field of gaming and personalisation suggests a significant impact on player engagement. For instance, a study by Accenture found that 91 per cent of consumers are more likely to shop with brands that provide relevant offers and recommendations. Applied to the gaming industry, personalised gaming experiences tailored to individual player preferences can lead to higher levels of engagement, retention, and satisfaction.

Additionally, companies like Amazon and Netflix have demonstrated the power of personalisation in driving customer engagement and loyalty, serving as compelling examples for gaming companies to leverage personalised experiences effectively.

CB: Are there any current topics that you’re expecting to dominate debates and conversation at CBS?

CT: I am anticipating that this year’s conversations at the CasinoBeats Summit will orbit around a few key topics. One major focus will likely be on how AI can improve entertainment experiences for players. For example, there may be discussions on using AI to suggest games tailored to individual preferences or to add more fun elements to gaming platforms.

Another important topic will be about increasing gamification in gaming platforms. This means adding more interactive features like challenges and rewards to make the gaming experience more engaging.

Lastly, there will likely be discussions on how to ensure player safety. This includes things like implementing measures to prevent problem gambling and creating a secure environment for players to enjoy games responsibly. I expect these topics to be at the forefront of discussions at CBS this year.

CB: What recent technological developments has Casumo undertaken to improve player protection within its offerings?

CT: At Casumo, ensuring the safety of our players is a foundational principle that guides every aspect of our business. We are steadfast in our commitment to prioritising player safety above all else. Our ongoing focus revolves around improving our technology to proactively protect our customers from potential harm.

We are rigorously testing and evaluating various solutions that we hope will fortify our defences and create a secure gaming environment where players can engage with peace of mind.

CB: Has Casumo utilised advancements in AI technology to streamline its business processes in any way?

CT: At Casumo, we’ve placed a significant focus on leveraging advancements in AI technology to enhance various aspects of our business operations. CB: Have there been any recent technological developments that you think will shape the future of igaming?

CT: While AI itself isn’t new, recent breakthroughs in generative AI hold immense promise for the future of igaming. These cutting-edge innovations are fundamentally changing how people engage with online environments, whether in professional contexts or everyday life.

In igaming, these advancements are poised to revolutionise player experiences by facilitating intelligent gaming flows and delivering personalised content recommendations. Companies such as Casumo are actively exploring the potential of AI to optimise various aspects of their operations, ranging from enhancing player interactions to streamlining internal processes.

Looking ahead, AI is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of igaming by enabling more accurate data predictions, fostering safer gaming environments and streamlining decision-making processes while enhancing productivity.

As the industry continues to innovate and harness the power of AI, we can anticipate a transition towards more immersive and tailored gaming experiences, ultimately driving increased engagement and satisfaction among players.

From bookmakers using pen and paper in the 19th century to the first online casino website in the late nineties, technological advancements have continued to shape the gambling industry.

With advances in technology rising exponentially, casino companies are often left playing catch up when figuring out how to capture the latest tech evolutions and utilise them in the best way possible.

Crowds gathered at SBC Summit Barcelona to better understand the next step the casino industry will take to adopt new technologies and throw them into the mainstream, as ‘the next-gen of casino’ panel showcased how Web3.0 may have already proved itself as such.

Hosted by Wesley Ellul, Co-Founder and CCO at Quizando, the panel kicked off with an in-depth explanation of just what Web3.0 entails, explaining that a decentralised network is leaving behind a world where the “consumer was the product”, as now, Web3.0 is helping “the community become part of, and a major stakeholder in, profitability on the web”.

Perhaps the most predominant element of Web3.0 is the mass adoption of cryptocurrency in modern businesses, with the casino industry taking on blockchain technology at a faster rate than ever before.

“each year the crypto players are growing and the business is increasing”

Dariia, CPO at MegaPari

While crypto-based casino platforms like Stake.com, Roobet.com, Duelbits.com and Rollbit.com are growing in popularity, cryptocurrency casinos remain unregulated in the majority of, if not all of, the world’s leading online casino territories.

Due to this, Ellul stated that in order for the discussion to go ahead, the panel and its audience would be “throwing regulation out the window” to question just how much impact decentralised technology will have on the future of casinos.

One speaker on the panel, Dariia, CPO at MegaPari, made the strong claim that the entirety of the casino industry “will go to crypto”, believing that players appreciate the anonymity that on-chain casinos provide to avoid handing out personal information, such as emails, names and addresses when signing up.

Relaying how crypto can be used to fast-track everyday business processes, she continued: “With Web3.0, you deal with crypto wallets and trust wallets. This process is so much easier because you can connect with the platform and the wallet altogether and give players the chance to have a 10-second registration. So it saves time.

“Moreover, we know that each year the crypto players are growing and the business is increasing.”

“A much more streamlined KYC process would be a game changer”

Francesco Postiglione, CEO at Casumo

Ellul was fascinated by the subject of crypto-supported KYC processes, adding: “That’s actually very interesting because the idea is we don’t have to identify our players anymore, in that these players have already been identified and KYC’d somewhere else. This could be a big change.”

This led Ellul to reach out for the perspective of Francesco Postiglione, CEO at Casumo, to gain another operator’s insight on fast-tracked KYC processes, posing the question: “How would that change the game for you in the sense of getting a player into the casino in 20 seconds, rather than that five-minute procedure?”

“We’d have a massive change in terms of costs,” Postiglione replied, suggesting that operators would save money through transactional costs presented by typical KYC processes, which usually require employees to perform manual checks for identity verification.

He continued: “There are expected situations of course, a dramatic improvement of the conversion rates, so a much more streamlined KYC process would be a game changer, not just for the casino, but for everybody.”

As Ellul moved on to the concept of a casino-based metaverse, he questioned whether the industry could replicate the success that metaverse-based video games have had in recent years, naming Roblox as a key example.

This led him to explain the success of Decentraland, a “very, very widely used” Metaverse game in which “the place that is visited most on a daily basis is their online casino.” Ellul commented that this could prove that casino players are looking for much more than the typically private online gambling experience.

“This is the attraction that we are seeing in these Metaverse spaces. It’s not just about the gambling side, but the social side.” This got the panel’s host thinking about how adding more social elements to the average casino experience could be “a great precursor before you get into a virtual reality Metaverse space.”

He then considered the issue that regulated operators are facing due to the rise of cryptocurrency casinos, stating that “all the general operators around the world are in a battle with decentralised casinos.”

Postiglione was quick to suggest that “it’s a challenge”, explaining: “We have the .com operators and on top of those now we have the Web3.0 casinos that are not regulated. There is a Bitcoin metaverse out there that is putting a lot of pressure on the regulators.”

“I believe that regulators could play a key role, firstly in understanding how this kind of business works, and secondly they have to regulate it in some way, otherwise the regular market will simply vanish.”

Before the session concluded, Dariia noted that however casino companies are offering products that utilise Web3.0, how well they can market the products will be “the key to success”, suggesting that this can often be challenging due to the general public’s understanding of Web3.0 technology.

A promise to deliver the “full Casumo experience” has been made by the online casino operator after becoming the latest addition to Ontario’s igaming ecosystem.

This comes after the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario issued a licence to the online sports betting and igaming operator, alongside PokerStars’ parent company TSG Interactive Canada, in June 2022.

The company confirmed that “we’re now up and running in the regulated Canadian province” on social media, where it joins almost 50 other incumbents on the region’s digital casino scene that includes the likes of BetMGM, PlayOJO, LeoVegas, Play Fallsview, DraftKings and FanDuel, among others.

This North American high point for Casumo comes after the entity was reprimanded by the Danish Gambling Authority, Spillemyndigheden, earlier this year for breaching the rules on identification and risk assessment in the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

“We’re thrilled to be one of the first operators licensed in the Ontario market, it’s a testament to the agility of our people and our tech. We’re excited to get going with our plans to bring Casumo magic to the fingertips of players all across Ontario,” Garry McGibbon, VP Commercial at Casumo, said of the group’s latest point of entry.

Last month, it was reported that Ontario’s online gaming market performance results for the second-quarter witnessed an increase of almost C$2bn on Q1’s total wagers figures.

iGaming Ontario declared total wagers of $6.04bn for the period ending September 30, an increase on Q1’s $4.07bn without promotional wagers factored in.

The regulator also reported $267m in total gaming revenue for operators during the quarter, a sizable increase from $162m.

Active player accounts were also up on the previous quarter, reaching 628,000 with an average spend of $142 compared to 492,000 and a $113 average.

Total revenue is represented by total cash wagers, which includes tournament, rake and other fees from 24 operators and 42 gaming websites (Q1: 18 operators, 31 websites).

Casumo has been reprimanded by the Danish Gambling Authority, the Spillemyndigheden, for breaching the rules on identification and risk assessment in the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

The regulator noted that the operator, which as of April 18, 2022, withdrew their licence and no longer offers online gambling in the market, has no obligation to act due to a subsequent update of risk assessment protocols.

One of the reasons that this action was taken is that Casumo, up until March 11, 2022, did not sufficiently include identification and risk assessment of customer types as it is said to have lacked identification and risk assessment of temporary accounts.

Furthermore, the online casino and sports betting firm was identified as not having sufficiently included a separate identification and risk assessment of their products, since their provision of gambling products did not appear separately from the risk assessment.

Finally, the reprimand was also issued as Casumo had not identified and risk assessed their delivery channels sufficiently, since their app was reportedly not risk assessed.

Subsequently, the Danish Gambling Authority assessed “that Casumo has not had a risk assessment which sufficiently contributed to ensure that Casumo was not abused for purposes of money laundering or financing of terrorism.

“The Danish Gambling Authority notes that the rules on risk assessment is a fundamental part of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

“As a rule, breaches of the rules and obligations lead to an order or a reprimand or in serious or repeated cases, they are reported to the police.”

Earlier in the month, Tipwin was reported to police by the Danish Gambling Authority for “breaching the rules on risk assessment, policies, business procedures, and supervision” of sections of the Anti-Money Laundering Act.

This was with regards to the provision of land-based gambling products, with the group also given orders regarding retail and online services. The DGA gave the group a three month time frame to correct these matters.
